Q: What’s the best online site for used car listings?
Anyone have any preferences? I want to buy a used car and there are so many websites. What are your favorites?

A: .
I have bought (and sold) several used cars through eBay. There are a few things to beware of, but they also do a lot of things to make it pretty easy.

For example, you can search in a particular price range, for a specific make and model, in a particular geographic area, and you can even specify a range of years so that you’ll get a car of a certain age. If you do the search right, you should only get a list of exactly the kind of thing you’re looking for.

What to watch out for are people who are trying to pass of junk as good cars. Read their feedback. This will tell you what other people have experienced when dealing with this person. Also, read their description carefully. Anyone who’s being honest will tell you not only what’s good about the car, but also what’s wrong with it.

If it’s a 10-year-old car, for example, and they say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, then I would be suspicious. On the other hand, if the car is three years old and they tell you that the cruise control doesn’t work and that there’s a scratch on the bumper, you can probably be sure that that really is all that’s wrong with the car.

Lots of car dealers have started using eBay to sell cars that they don’t want to sell on their lot. New car dealers, for example, might have a rule that they won’t sell anything on the used car lot that’s more than five years old. But they get in the occasional cream-puff that they wouldn’t mind selling if they didn’t have this rule. So they put it on eBay. That can be nice.

It’s a fun search if you do it right and you can end up with some real bargains. Good luck!

Q: can anyone tell me of any sites for used car listings in the bloomington ill area?
im look for private sellers, not dealers. im in a real jam and need to find a CHEAP car fast. i really dont care what it looks like, and i can deal with minor problems

A: I know this one has some dealer information as well, but it’s a great website for cheap, used cars.

Q: Are private owner used car sales changed by the economy?
What I need to know is if private listings for used cars are selling at actual value or close to the value of the car? Is it normal to find major savings for the buyer right now in this situation? I know it is possible to find major saving from private listings always but in general right now is there high amount of sellers asking and selling under what they should?

A: The answer is “YES!” Many things effect the prices of vehicles and if you do not work in the industry you will not know it directly as a consumer. An example is the recent increase of gas prices. If you are the private owner of a 2006 Chevrolet Suburban with a book value of $32,000 (as an example) and a dealership can buy them at an auto auction for $12,000 dollars, how are you going to trade the vehicle? You can’t because you would take a bath in lost equity.

A private seller also does not have the same responsibility as a dealer for ensuring the vehicle is safe. Items like brake wear, tires and such are replaced if not worthy of an inspection. A private buyer can sell the vehicle as it sits. It has an effect on a consumer because they may have to spend some money within a short period of time to replace such items.

To make this short and simple; every market is effected by the economy (to include private and dealer wholesale). If the economy recovers, the market for selling privately will also change. It’s something you have to be careful of becasue you could end up buying a car that had little or no actual value for the market you’re buying in. Do Your Research!

Q: Where can I find listings of used cars for sale?
I am seeking online listings for used Cadillac vehicles.
I have used eBay, Autotrader, KBB, and Cars.com. Are there other sites? Thanks!

A: http://www.carsdirect.com/used_cars/search

this site also gives many great tips on how to ensure the car your looking at is a good one to buy

Q: Craigslist for used cars? How about the used cars on Carfax?? ?
I specifically wanted to know if the used car listings on Carfax are reliable or not. I’d also like to know the same for craigslist. Any recommendations for other websites? Which are the most reliable?
Thanks a lot.

A: Does not matter if they are listed on CL, cars.com, autotrader, newspaper, etc. What makes a vehicle reliable is how it was maintained by the previous owner and if the title is clear or not. Always have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle and run a carfax.

Q: what should be my concerns when buying a used car from a private party?
i was looking at different listings to purchase a used car. i can get a better deal buying from an owner rather than a dealer. i would like to know what are my main concerns with doing this? and about making a safe legitimate transaction?

A: Private parties do not collect any of the taxes that dealers do (in most states…). They also do have a dealer bond or any of the legal constraints that dealer’s are expected to adhere to. That is, you may pay less, but you have little recourse if you get cheated.

ALWAYS have any used car you are considering checked by a mechanically competent person, ALWAYS inspect the title history. And, pay cash. Do the final transaction at a Motor Vehicle office to make sure the title is clean.

If you are careful, you may get a real bargain. If not, you may get a real stick up your ***.

Be careful! there are a lot of people making a living with scams, and there are a lot of owners who don’t want you to know what you are really buying, not to mention the private sellers who really don’t know how bad the car they are selling actually is.

I wish you luck!

Q: Is there a web site that people post listings for used cars they want to buy?
Basically to help sellers contact potential buyers? And is where you can put in your zip code for local searches?

A: Yes see this one.

Q: How does buying a used car from a dealer work, exactly?
I’ve been looking at used car listings online for a few days now, and found one that I liked, for a reasonable price, on the AAA used auto site. I contacted the dealer and set up an appointment to go take a look at the car. Before I decide to buy it, I am, of course, taking it for a test drive, checking out the car-fax report, and getting it inspected by an independent mechanic. I’m planning on paying the balance in full, so I won’t have to finance. My appointment is set for this weekend, and I won’t have all the money by then, but if I decide I want the car and want the dealer to hold it for me, would he do that, and would I have to put down a deposit? However, if I happen to find a better deal elsewhere, would I get this deposit back? I’ve heard from several people, that even if I like the car, I should not make a deal right then and there. Why is that? How exactly does all of this work?

A: Sounds like you are doing a great job with the test drive, doing the car-fax report, getting it inspected. All excellent.

One thing you may not have done yet is to check on the blue book value. You can google on “blue book value” if you need to find a website that will give you an estimated value of the car. You may need to know the accessories on the car to get an exact blue book estimate, if you don’t know that’s ok, it will just be a rough estimate.

But that will help you get an idea, if the price you are paying for the used car is reasonable.

Suggested answer above is right on target. Just ask if you can put a deposit down to hold it, and if you can get your full deposit back if you changed your mind. They may only be able to hold the car for you for 24 hrs though.

If you really want that car, you probably won’t change your mind, ie. you could consider not putting a deposit on the car unless you want to buy it.

Also, don’t let the salesman pressure you into anything. For example, a deal that’s good today should be good tomorrow or this weekend. If he says the price goes up after you walk out the door, then you can take your business elsewhere.

The advice from the other people you’ve talked to probably refers to negotiating the price. If you find the blue book value is way way under the price they are asking, you can suggest to the salesperson that the blue book is a certain number, and you’re willing to pay a bit more than that, but not the huge price they have right now. Almost always, a car dealer posts a price on a car that they are willing to sell for less than that.

Good luck to you!

Q: What is the best website to find a GOOD used car?
I am looking to buy a used car that is about 4-5 years old yet has lower mileage and costs a low price. What is a good website to look at? I find that yahoo autos for example, has a lot of spam listings.

A: Try the Kelly BlueBook web site. They have a section for car sales, and they all either have a carfax report or record check. It is easy to use, and gives a lot of info and pics. It also gives the blue book value right there, so you know if you are getting a fair price. Good luck!

Q: Websites where i can find used cars?
What are some websites i can go on to find used car listings for sale? I already know cars.com autotrader.com craigslist.com.

Anymore you know of?

A: LotPro.com

Q: how much should I ask for a used car? Where is the best marketplace to sell?
I have a 1997 toyota corolla dx (121K) to sell. I checked the blue book value and it said a good condition one worth $3800. I also checked some listings on the newspaper and websites. However, I found the price range is very wide. I am so confused and don’t know how much is a reasonable price I should ask for. I took to dealer and they said it is a 10 year car and basically they don’t buy car that old. It’s a very nice car and in very good shape. I really hate to sell at “cash for car” place.
Anyone can give me some suggestion?

Is posting on newspaper effective? I checked craigslist but there are tons of car posted there everyday. The ad got swamped in a second. If I plan to pay some listing fee, which website you would suggest?

I am not in a rush for cash but the insurance is about to expire and if I keep the car for long I will just have to keep paying insurance bill. If you were me, what would you do? being patient and waiting for buyers or just sell to “cash for car”?

A: Take the car to an independent used car dealer (a new car dealer will not be interested in a car that old) or to Carmax. They will give you a purchase offer based on the condition of the vehicle. This will be wholesale price. Without seeing the car to be sure, I would say that it should be in the $2000-$2500 range.

If that is what it is worth wholesale, add $1000- $1400 to that and get an asking price that is reasonable!!

This will give a basis for pricing your car if you decide to sell it yourself (retail). To get the most money for a vehicle, have any repairs, and state inspections done. You may want to consider having the vehicle professionally detailed.

I would put a picture ad in the Autotrader magazine, and on Autotrader.com. to get the best results.

Q: I am trying to buy a used car from a private party…where do I look in Chicago?
I am trying to search from home and most of the databases I am finding (cars.com, autotrader.com, etc) are mostly listings from Dealerships….

Does anybody know of a website that a lot of individual sellers use to sell used cars?

Thanks

A: Type in on google “cars for sale by owner Chicago” and see what comes up….should be something in there for cars for sale by owner…..I find it very hard to believe that autotrader.com and cars.com could not give you a lot of listings….did you look at it right????? Also Try “Deals on Wheels”……………
